English has 100 two-letter words in our dictionary, and the 40 common ones are the small words of every sentence: am, an, as, at, be, by, do, go, he, if, in, is, it, me, my, no, of, on, or, so, to, up, us, we, with the sounds people make, ah, eh, oh, ha, hi, ho. The 44 rare ones are the ones worth learning for board word games, because they let a word be laid alongside another: aa (a kind of lava), qi (life energy), xi and xu, za, jo and ka all count, and qi, xi, xu and za place a Q, X or Z with no help from a U.
