- The grid has 9 rows, 9 columns and nine 3 × 3 boxes, 81 cells in all.
- Each row, each column and each box holds the numbers 1 to 9, each once.
- Some cells are given. Fill the others; a given number never changes.
- A good sudoku has one solution, and you reach it by looking, never by guessing.
Easy, medium, hard and expert sudoku
Each puzzle here is made when you press its level, and has one solution. The levels differ in what it takes:
- Easy38 numbers given; each cell is the only number left or the only place left
- Medium31 given; the same two ways, but the cells are harder to see
- Hardabout 26 given; the two ways above are not enough, notes and pairs are needed
- Expert22 to 25 given, as few as the puzzle allows; notes all the way
How to solve sudoku: four techniques
The only number left
Look at one empty cell and cross out every number already in its row, its column and its box. If one number is left, it goes there.
The only place left
Take one number and one row, column or box. If the number can go in only one of its empty cells, it goes there. Scan the boxes with each number in turn.
Notes
On harder puzzles, write the numbers each cell can still take in small. Every number you place crosses itself out of the notes in its row, column and box.
Pairs
Two cells of a unit that can only take the same two numbers hold those two between them, so no other cell of that unit can. The notes elsewhere shrink.
Stuck? Press Hint on the game: it shows the next cell to fill and why, from wherever the grid stands.
How the sudoku solver works
It checks your numbers first: two of the same in a row, column or box are shown in red. Then it fills the grid the way a person would, the only number left for a cell or the only place left for a number, and says which at each cell. When no cell is certain, it takes the one with the fewest numbers left and the number the solution needs. It also says when a puzzle has no solution, or more than one.
The history of sudoku
Howard Garns, an architect from Indiana, made the puzzle for Dell Magazines, which printed it in 1979 as Number Place. In 1984 the Japanese publisher Nikoli brought it to Japan, and its founder Maki Kaji named it sudoku, short for "the digits must be single". Wayne Gould, a judge from New Zealand, wrote a program to make the puzzles, and in November 2004 The Times in London started printing them. By 2005 sudoku was in newspapers around the world.
Questions
How do you play sudoku?
Fill the 9 × 9 grid so that each row, each column and each of the nine 3 × 3 boxes holds the numbers 1 to 9 once. Some numbers are given; a good sudoku has only one way to fill the rest.
What is the best way to solve a sudoku?
Start with the only places: take each number in turn and look for a box, row or column where it fits in a single cell. When that runs dry, write notes in the empty cells and look for cells with one number left.
What is the fewest numbers a sudoku can start with?
17. In 2012 Gary McGuire, Bastian Tugemann and Gilles Civario showed by a computer search that no sudoku with 16 numbers given has only one solution, and puzzles with 17 exist.
How many sudoku grids are there?
6,670,903,752,021,072,936,960 different filled grids, counted by Bertram Felgenhauer and Frazer Jarvis in 2005. Grids that are the same after turning, mirroring or relabelling them come down to 5,472,730,538.
Does sudoku need maths?
No. Sudoku is about places, not sums: any nine symbols would do as well as the numbers 1 to 9. Killer sudoku is a different puzzle that adds sums of cages.
How do I solve my own sudoku?
Pick a cell in the solver above and type its number, for every number of your puzzle, then press Solve. It fills the grid one cell at a time and says why each number goes where it goes; Pause, Back and Next let you follow it.
