Questions

How are syllables counted?

Each word is looked up in a pronouncing dictionary and its vowel sounds are counted: one vowel sound, one syllable. A word the dictionary does not know is counted by its vowel groups, and marked.

How many syllables does a haiku have?

Five, seven and five syllables over three lines. Type each line and the counter shows its total.

Why can a count differ from mine?

Some words have two pronunciations with different syllables, like fire (one or two). The counter uses the first one in the dictionary.
