What the counter counts

Words

Every run of letters or digits counts as one word. Contractions like don't and hyphenated words like well-known count once.

Sentence counter and paragraphs

A sentence ends at a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark. A paragraph ends at an empty line.

Reading time calculator: words per minute

At 238 words a minute read silently and 150 spoken aloud: a 500-word essay takes about two minutes to read and three to say.
