Dino Sudoku

A dinosaur puzzle game online, free: a picture sudoku with dinosaurs in place of numbers, and every row, column and box needs each of them once. Start with a 4x4 sudoku of four prehistoric pictures, move up to a 9x9 on medium and hard, and get a fresh board every time you press a level, with notes and a hint ready.

Every row, column and box needs each picture once. Pick an empty cell, then a picture.

How to play dino sudoku

  1. Choose a square without a picture. Its row, its column and its 3 × 3 or 2 × 2 box are lit.
  2. See which dinosaurs and fossils are already there. The one still missing from all three fills your square.
  3. Tap it in the row of pictures below the board. A wrong one turns the square red.
  4. Finish the board: every row, column and box holds each picture once.

Easy, medium and hard

  • Easy4 × 4 with four prehistoric pictures in four colours and 6 placed: quick, and good for a first dinosaur sudoku
  • Medium9 × 9 with nine pictures, from the T-Rex to the volcano, and about 38 placed
  • Hard9 × 9 with about 31 placed: a real sudoku in dinosaurs, solved by looking, never by guessing

On a keyboard, the arrow keys walk the board, 1 to 9 place the pictures in the order shown below it, Backspace removes one and N switches notes.

How to solve dino sudoku

The last dinosaur standing

For one empty square, rule out the T-Rex, the stegosaurus and every other picture its row, column and box already hold. If one picture survives, it goes in.

One spot for the T-Rex

Pick a picture, the T-Rex say, and one box. Strike every square a T-Rex already sees along its row or column. If a single square is left in the box, the T-Rex belongs there.

The dinosaurs

Twenty-four pictures, drawn for this game: sixteen dinosaurs and their neighbours (the pterosaur flew, the plesiosaur swam, the mammoth came much later), with an egg, a hatchling, a footprint, a fossil, a volcano and three plants. Every new puzzle takes new ones: a 4 × 4 takes four in four different colours, a 9 × 9 takes nine that never look alike.

Questions

What is dino sudoku?

A sudoku with dinosaurs and other prehistoric pictures where the digits would be. No picture repeats in a row, a column or a box: four pictures on the 4 × 4, nine on the 9 × 9.

Are all the pictures dinosaurs?

Most are, from the T-Rex to the oviraptor. The pterosaur and the plesiosaur were reptiles that lived beside the dinosaurs, one flying and one in the sea, and the mammoth came much later. With them come a dino egg, a hatchling, a footprint, a fossil, a volcano, a palm tree, a fern and a crystal.

How is it different from a number sudoku?

Only in what you look at. The places matter, not the values, so a stegosaurus does the job of a 3. Hard is a complete 9 × 9 sudoku.

Is there always one solution?

Yes. Each board is generated when you press its level and kept only if the pictures fit one way and no other.

What if I get stuck?

Press Hint: the next square lights up, with the picture that goes there and why. If a picture of yours is wrong, the hint goes to it first.

Are there more picture sudokus?

Yes, eighteen more on the same board. After the dinosaurs, Animal Sudoku, Ocean Sudoku or Robot Sudoku are the nearest in spirit; each set keeps its own best times.
