Letter Sudoku
A sudoku with letters online, free: every row, column and box needs each letter once, and when the board is done one row spells a hidden word. A 4x4 alphabet sudoku on easy, a 9x9 word sudoku on medium and hard, with notes and a hint when you are stuck.
How to solve letter sudoku
The only letter left
Look at one empty cell and rule out every letter already in its row, its column and its box. If one letter is left, it goes there.
The only place left
Take one letter and one row, column or box. If it can go in only one of the empty cells there, it goes there. On the 9 × 9, scan the boxes with each letter in turn.

The hidden word
The letters of each puzzle are the letters of one word, each used once: four on the 4 × 4, such as BIRD or GOLD, nine on the 9 × 9, such as SNOWFLAKE or WONDERFUL. When the last cell is filled, the row that spells it lights up. You can play it as a plain sudoku and let the word surprise you, or guess the word early and use it: once you know the row, its letters' order is the answer to that row.
Questions
What is letter sudoku?
A sudoku with letters in place of numbers. Each row, each column and each box holds every letter once: four letters on the 4 × 4 board, nine on the 9 × 9. Here the letters are a word's, and one row of the solved board spells it.
Is it the same as alphabet sudoku or word sudoku?
The same game under other names: alphabet sudoku, ABC sudoku and sudoku with letters all put letters where the numbers were. A word sudoku is one whose letters also spell a word, as every puzzle here does.
Do I need to be good at spelling?
No. Sudoku is about places, not sums, so letters work as well as the numbers 1 to 9. Spelling helps only at the end, if you guess the word before the row is full.
Can I type the letters?
On a computer, type it: the letter keys write the letters of the puzzle, the arrow keys move between cells and Backspace erases. On a phone, tap the letters under the board.
Does every puzzle have one answer?
Yes, every one: each puzzle is made when you press its level, and the game checks that there is only one way to fill it.
What if I get stuck?
Press Hint. It shows the next cell to fill and says why the letter goes there. If a letter is in the wrong place, the hint points to it first.
