Vegetable Sudoku

A vegetable puzzle game online, free: a picture sudoku with vegetables in place of numbers, and every row, column and box needs each of them once. A 4x4 sudoku on easy, a 9x9 vegetable patch on medium and hard, a new board with each press of a level, and notes and a hint when a row will not ripen.

Every row, column and box needs each vegetable once. Pick an empty cell, then a vegetable.

How to play vegetable sudoku

  1. Choose an empty square. Its row, its column and its box are lit.
  2. Check the vegetables already in them. The vegetable all three lack goes in your square.
  3. Tap it under the board. A wrong one turns the square red.
  4. Fill the patch: every row, column and box has each vegetable once.

Easy, medium and hard

  • Easy4 × 4 with four vegetables in four colours and 6 given: the whole patch in view
  • Medium9 × 9 with nine vegetables and about 38 given: a classic sudoku from carrot to corn
  • Hard9 × 9 with about 31 given: fewer to start from, solved without guessing

How to solve vegetable sudoku

The last vegetable

For one empty square, take away every vegetable its row, column and box already hold. If only the pumpkin, say, is left, the pumpkin goes in.

Where the carrot fits

Follow one vegetable, the carrot, through one column. A square is out when its row or box already has a carrot. The only square left gets it.

Twenty-four vegetables, drawn for this game: roots like the carrot and the beet, greens like the broccoli and the leek, and the corn, the pumpkin and the tomato. Look-alikes, the leek, the celery and the asparagus, or the beet, the radish and the turnip, never share a board.

Questions

What is vegetable sudoku?

A sudoku with vegetables where the numbers would be. Each row, column and box holds every vegetable once: four on the 4 × 4, nine on the 9 × 9.

Is the logic the same as sudoku?

Yes, the very same. A vegetable takes the place of a digit, so the eggplant can be your 9. Medium and hard are full 9 × 9 sudokus.

Why are the leek and the celery never together?

Long green stalks look alike at the size of a square, and so do round roots like the beet, the radish and the turnip. The game keeps them on separate boards, so every vegetable is easy to pick out.

Does each board have one solution?

Yes. A board is made when you press its level and kept only if the vegetables fit one way and no other.

What if I get stuck?

Press Hint. It shows the next square, the vegetable that goes there and why, pointing first to any vegetable in the wrong square.
